Can a 300 or 400 pound person ride a jet ski?

On the listings' own figures, a 300 lb rider is under each per-ski cap, with a passenger fitting in what is left. A 400 lb rider alone meets the 400 lb cap exactly, while the 450 lb and 485 lb caps leave some margin.

The caps count everyone on the ski. On a 400 lb listing, a 300 lb driver leaves 100 lb for a passenger; on the Fort Walton Beach rental (450 lb) it leaves 150 lb; on Luther's (485 lb for 2 adults) it leaves 185 lb. If the pair is over the cap, book two skis, and ask the operator before booking if you are near a limit: the Fort Walton Beach listing says its cap is strictly enforced. What is the difference between a Jet Ski, a WaveRunner and a Sea-Doo?

They are brand names for the same type of craft. Jet Ski is Kawasaki's trademark (introduced in 1973), WaveRunner is Yamaha's and Sea-Doo is BRP's; the legal term is personal watercraft.

Florida law defines a personal watercraft as a vessel under 16 ft, powered by an inboard water-jet, that is ridden by sitting, standing or kneeling on it rather than inside it. The rules for age, the boater card, life jackets, the lanyard and the night ban apply to every PWC in the same way, whatever the badge on the side. Rental skis are usually lower-powered models, and some may be electronically limited with modes such as Sea-Doo's Learning Key or Yamaha's L-Mode; whether a Destin rental uses one is up to the operator.

How fast can a 300 hp jet ski go?

Industry sources put flagship production PWCs at about 65 to 67 mph in ideal conditions, in line with the informal limit of about 65 mph.

There is no 300 hp ceiling: Sea-Doo's 2026 spec sheet lists a factory 325 hp model, the GTX Limited 325, with 600 lb capacity. The trade press reports that the industry agreement concerned how horsepower is rated, not a cap on it. On a Destin rental the speed that matters is the one the water allows: idle speed and slow speed zones apply near harbors and crowds, and Florida treats weaving through congested traffic and jumping another vessel's wake too close as reckless operation.

Is it hard to fall off a jet ski, and can you get back on?

Florida requires every livery to give pre-rental instruction on how the craft handles, right-of-way, local hazards and emergency procedures, including capsizing and falls overboard. Can a jet ski pull a 2 person tube?

Florida law allows towing with an observer on board or a wide-angle rear-view mirror, but many rental operators do not allow towing on their skis. Ask the operator first.

Under F.S. 327.37, you may not tow a person on skis, a tube or a similar device unless someone besides the driver is in a position to watch them, or the craft has a wide-angle rear-view mirror. The towed riders wear non-inflatable USCG-approved life jackets, and there is no towing from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. Boater-education guidance adds that with an observer aboard, the PWC should be rated for at least three people.
